This is a devastating story of unspeakable loss and I am glad to have read her memoir. As I read the book, I became more unsettled by the lack of awareness conveyed by the author about her privilege during this entire experience. Celebrity friends paying for private healthcare teams. Sneaking into Cedars Sinai for months to see her husband while the common folk said goodbye to dying loved ones over FaceTime because they weren’t allowed in. Getting relatives special exemptions to travel into the country to see her husband while the rest of the citizens were not allowed to. Telling others suffering from during the pandemic to just ask for help and It will “work out. “. Celebrities gave her houses to live in and a million dollar go fund me. Hardly what many people would experience when asking for help during this time. Missed the mark in my opinion and flaunted how lucky she was while others truly struggled to make ends meet during this time. Admitting she misled her IG followers about her circumstances. Disappointing. I started following Amanda and Nick's story on Instagram after hearing about it on ZB's podcast. Like many of us, I tuned in daily for updates and was fully rooting for Nick and his "Code Rocky." I had seen Nick perform on Broadway and met him backstage afterwards. While I'll admit I wasn't like a superfan, I knew who he was prior to him contracting Covid-19. I loved how much Amanda made herself vulnerable to strangers and how much of the story she shared every day. Once I heard about her book deal, I knew I wanted to read it, even though I felt like I already knew the story from following her on Instagram. Boy was I wrong! The book, while a quick read, isn't very well-written. But to me, that part of it doesn't even matter; it's a memoir published by a two first-time authors. What DID bother me about the book however, is the immense about of privilege that was on display throughout the entire book. As a follower of her Instagram I felt deceived; she had been visiting Nick all along. The first time "we" thought she got to see him wasn't actually the first time at all. She had access all along and complained often in the book that the visits weren't long enough or that it was frustrating that some days she wasn't even allowed to visit - all while families around the globe were saying their final good-byes over Zoom or FaceTime. Families were never allowed to set foot in the hospital. Her mother-in-law was allowed to enter the country from Canada even though the borders were closed. She and her family were offered a large house to live in Laurel Canyon - free of charge - for as long as they needed. Her go fund me raised over a million dollars, continuing to grow even after Nick passed away. This is NOT the reality that almost all other covid families faced and honestly, it just doesn't seem fair. To make it worse, Amanda didn't really seem aware of it. She quickly glosses over these things in the book. I think the part about her mother-in-law coming was one sentence. My family and I did not lose anyone to Covid, thankfully, but I imagine if we had, reading this would feel like a stab in the back.None of this erases or diminishes the tragedy of their story but a 300+ page book about it feels unnecessary and tone deaf.
